The fantasy of closing week is a USB full of unreleased heat. The reality is a bag of records the DJ has already trusted at 4am. Closings are emotional and long. You do not learn a track in front of 2,000 people who flew in for the finale.
That is a lesson for the rest of the year too. New music is for the nights you can afford to miss. Proven music is for the nights that matter. Rhythm Label’s job is to get records into the first category early enough that they can graduate to the second. Fire & Stone is no use to anyone if the first time you hear it is on the plane home.
If you are playing a closing, or even a local “last outdoor of the year,” build the set backwards. End with something that feels like a door shutting, not a trailer for next season. Leave space. The crowd is already carrying the year.
Then, the week after, start the winter pile. Studio season is coming. The next catalogue is not going to write itself.
